Franciscan Friars of the Southwest have ministered with Secular Franciscans since 1610, when the first S.F.O. Fraternity was established in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1985, when the O.F.M. Guadalupe Province grew out of the Cincinnati St John the Baptist Province, the Guadalupe S.F.O. Province also grew out of the Cincinnati Province.
The Secular Franciscans are and Order of men and women who try to live their lives in the world living out the Gospel by following the example of St. Francis. They used to be called the Third Order of St. Francis.
The Seculars in this part of the country, that is, in northern New Mexico and parts of Texas belong to Region #75 named Our Lady of Guadalupe Empress of the Americas Region.  There are some thirty regions throughout the United States.  In each of the Regions there are Fraternities. There are some 683 Fraternities throughout the US.  Our Province is responsible for Region #75 of which there are twenty Fraternities. In New Mexico there are two Fraternities in Albuquerque: St. Anthony and Jesus the Morning Star with Fr. Chrysostom Partee as their Spiritual Assistant.  There is one “emerging” Fraternity, Espiritu Santo with Fr. Gonzalo Moreno as their Spiritual Assistant. Roswell St. Francis Fraternity has Joe Redinbo as the Spiritual Assistant, Santa Fe, St. Francis Fraternity has Wayne Gibbeaut as their Spiritual Assistant. There are Fraternities in Carlsbad, Las Cruces, Mescalero and Taos. There are Fraternities in Texas, Amarillo, El Paso (5 Fraternities) Lubbock, Midland-Odessa, Plainview and Synder. There Spiritual Assistants are Sisters or people trained to be Spiritual Assistants.
We have a wonderful Regional Minister, Christine Imislund, SFO (Secular Franciscan Order) and a Regional Spiritual Assistant, Larry Schreiber.  Each Fraternity has a Minister, a Spiritual Assistant, a Treasurer, Secretary, a Formator with her team, and Councilors who meet to determine how the Fraternity is to operate. Each if these people are elected for a term of three years.  The Regional Minister and Spiritual Assistant are to meet with each of the Fraternities each year for elections and visitations. Our Region is divided up into seven areas with a Representative for each of the areas. These are also elected.  The Fraternities are operated by the Seculars themselves.  It is a secular Order. They are living out the Gospel in their communities in many different ways.  They help the poor, minister in their parishes under the pastor in whatever way they can. They meet once or twice a month for prayer, a business meeting, and social.
They truly live out their lives as Gospel people.  You may notice they conduct their Order much as the other two Orders of Franciscans, the First (OFM, OFM Cap. OFM Conventual) and Second Orders (the Poor Clares).  What a wonderful Franciscan Family we have.  We need to support them and promote them in our Parishes.  We need you to be their Spiritual Assistants.
